In her powerful and eye-opening book, Incarcerated Childhood, author Crystal Laura discusses how children are treated as adults by the law and are subjected to the same harsh treatment as adult prisoners. As a result, these children are denied their childhood and are often left with lifelong trauma.
Laura draws on her own experiences as a social worker in the juvenile justice system to provide a firsthand account of the devastating impact of incarceration on children. She discusses the ways in which children are criminalized for behavior that is developmentally normal, and how they are often subjected to solitary confinement, physical and sexual abuse, and other forms of mistreatment.
Laura argues that the criminal justice system is failing our children, and that we need to find new ways to address the problems that lead to their incarceration. She calls for a more compassionate and restorative approach to juvenile justice, one that focuses on rehabilitation and prevention rather than punishment.
Incarcerated Childhood is a must-read for anyone who cares about the well-being of our children. It is a powerful indictment of the criminal justice system and a call to action for change.
