Robert William Andrew Feller was born on November 3, 1918, in Van Meter, Iowa. He grew up on a farm and began playing baseball at an early age. He quickly developed a blazing fastball that caught the attention of scouts from the Cleveland Indians.

Feller signed with the Indians in 1936 and made his major league debut in 1938. He immediately became one of the most dominant pitchers in the game, leading the American League in strikeouts six times and winning the Triple Crown in 1940.
