About the Book

To Be Mayor Of New York is an inspiring memoir by former New York City Mayor David Dinkins. The book chronicles his journey from humble beginnings to becoming the first African American mayor of New York City. Dinkins shares his insights on leadership, service, and the challenges of governing a major city.

Dinkins was born in Trenton, New Jersey, in 1927. He grew up in a working-class family and attended Howard University, where he earned a degree in economics. After graduating from Howard, Dinkins served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He then returned to New York City and began his career in public service.

Dinkins was elected to the New York City Council in 1978. He served as president of the council from 1986 to 1989. In 1989, Dinkins was elected mayor of New York City. He served one term, from 1990 to 1993.

During his time as mayor, Dinkins faced a number of challenges, including the city's fiscal crisis, the Crown Heights riots, and the 1991 World Trade Center bombing. Despite these challenges, Dinkins made significant progress in areas such as education, healthcare, and affordable housing.

To Be Mayor Of New York is a fascinating and inspiring account of one man's journey to the highest office in the city. Dinkins's story is a testament to the power of perseverance, hard work, and public service.
