The Early Years

Carter and Ralph Stanley were born in Dickenson County, Virginia, in 1925 and 1927, respectively. They grew up in a musical family, and they began singing and playing together at an early age. In 1946, they formed a band with their cousin, Pee Wee Lambert, and began playing at local dances and fairs. In 1948, they signed a recording contract with Mercury Records, and their first single, "Molly and Tenbrooks," became a hit.
